Phantom Blade Zero is about to receive one of its most important showcases since its original reveal. Sony and developer S-GAME have announced a dedicated State of Play gameplay deep dive focused entirely on the upcoming action RPG. The presentation will feature nearly 20 minutes of new gameplay, giving players a much closer look at the game’s combat, mechanics and world. For Indian viewers, the presentation is scheduled for August 18 at 7:30 AM IST, following its August 17 broadcast in North America. The timing makes this particularly interesting for gamers who want to see what could become one of the most talked-about PS5 action games of the year.
And there’s already plenty of curiosity surrounding it.

When Is the Phantom Blade Zero State of Play?

Sony has confirmed that the special presentation will take place on August 17 at 7 PM PT / 10 PM ET, which translates to August 18 at 7:30 AM IST. The event will be available through PlayStation’s official YouTube and Twitch channels.

New YorkAugust 1710:00 PM ET
UKAugust 183:00 AM BST
IndiaAugust 187:30 AM IST
JapanAugust 1811:00 AM JST

The presentation is expected to run for nearly 20 minutes, making it much more substantial than a typical short trailer.

Why Everyone Is Watching Phantom Blade Zero

The game has been attracting attention since its 2023 announcement, partly because it combines fast martial-arts combat with a dark fantasy world inspired by Chinese wuxia storytelling. S-GAME describes its setting as a “Kungfupunk” world that combines Chinese kung fu, mechanical technology, occult elements and other influences. Players take control of Soul, an elite assassin who has only 66 days to live after being saved from a near-fatal injury. That unusual combination is one reason the game stands out from more conventional action RPGs. The combat is also a major attraction. Rather than focusing purely on slow, defensive Soulslike combat, S-GAME has repeatedly emphasized fast, elaborate martial-arts moves inspired by classic kung fu cinema.

The New Gameplay Trailer Already Revealed a Surprise

Sony and S-GAME have already released an 11-minute trailer ahead of the State of Play, giving players a taste of what is coming. The trailer provides additional story and gameplay footage, while also revealing the involvement of martial-arts star Donnie Yen. Recent reporting says Yen has worked with the project as a creative consultant on combat choreography and also contributes performance work for the character Mó Yuan. That revelation adds another interesting layer to the game’s combat design. Donnie Yen is known for highly choreographed martial-arts performances, so his involvement naturally raises expectations for how polished Phantom Blade Zero’s fighting system could become.

What Could Sony Show During the 20-Minute Deep Dive?

Sony hasn’t published a complete breakdown of everything that will appear during the presentation. However, the official announcement says the showcase will provide a much deeper look at gameplay features, mechanics and the Phantom World ahead of launch. That leaves plenty of room for surprises. There has been plenty of community speculation about a demo, particularly after reports of a briefly visible listing, but Sony has not officially confirmed a demo announcement. So that’s one rumor we should keep firmly in the rumor category.

Phantom Blade Zero Release Date

The game isn’t coming immediately after the State of Play. PlayStation’s official website currently lists October 29, 2026 as the release date for Phantom Blade Zero. The game is confirmed for PS5, while the current official PlayStation listing identifies it as a single-player action title.

Pre-Orders Are Already Open

S-GAME has already opened pre-orders, with the Standard and Deluxe editions available ahead of launch. Recent coverage reports prices of $59.99 for the Standard Edition and $69.99 for the Deluxe Edition in the US market. That means the State of Play isn’t simply a marketing introduction. Players can already decide whether they want to reserve the game before seeing the full presentation. That makes the August showcase particularly important: the game is close enough to launch that Sony and S-GAME need to demonstrate why players should care.

What Makes the Combat Different?

The combat is arguably Phantom Blade Zero’s biggest selling point. S-GAME has previously explained that it wanted to capture the speed and spectacle of classic kung fu films while keeping the strategic elements that modern action games have popularized. The developers have also emphasized handcrafted animation rather than relying solely on traditional motion capture for combat moves. According to S-GAME’s original PlayStation announcement, action director Kenji Tanigaki works with the team to demonstrate and develop the combat choreography. That’s a fascinating approach. Instead of simply making attacks look realistic, the developers are trying to make them look cinematic and deliberately choreographed.

A Dark Wuxia World With a Sci-Fi Twist

The game’s setting is another reason it has attracted attention. The Phantom World mixes traditional wuxia influences with machinery, occult elements and a darker fantasy atmosphere. PlayStation describes the game as a fusion of classic wuxia storytelling and fast-paced action powered by Unreal Engine 5. The protagonist, Soul, is caught in a conspiracy after being framed for the murder of The Order’s patriarch.

He survives thanks to a mysterious treatment — but the cure only gives him 66 days. That ticking-clock concept gives the story a natural sense of urgency.

Is Phantom Blade Zero a Soulslike?

It’s tempting to describe every challenging action RPG as a Soulslike, but that doesn’t completely explain Phantom Blade Zero. S-GAME has previously discussed the popularity of strategic action games such as Soulslikes and Monster Hunter while explaining that it wanted to create something closer to the breathtaking action of 1990s kung fu cinema. So while Phantom Blade Zero may share some DNA with modern action RPGs, its combat philosophy appears to be more heavily focused on speed, choreography and cinematic martial arts. The State of Play should give us a much clearer idea of exactly where it sits.

The Donnie Yen Connection Makes It Even More Interesting

One of the newest revelations is Donnie Yen’s involvement. Recent coverage reports that Yen has been contributing to the game’s martial-arts direction since 2023, including creative consultation and performance work. That’s not just a celebrity cameo. For a game whose entire identity revolves around martial-arts choreography, having someone with Yen’s experience involved behind the scenes could potentially influence the authenticity and presentation of its combat. The upcoming gameplay deep dive should give players a better idea of how much of that influence can actually be seen in the final game.

Will Phantom Blade Zero Be a PS5 Hit?

It’s too early to say. But the ingredients are certainly there. The game has an unusual visual identity, fast combat, a strong protagonist concept, a major Sony showcase and a release date in one of the busiest gaming periods of the year. The bigger challenge will be execution. A spectacular trailer can generate hype, but players will ultimately want to know whether the combat remains satisfying after several hours, whether the world offers meaningful exploration and whether the story can match the visual presentation. That’s exactly why this State of Play matters.

GizmoAlert’s Take

Phantom Blade Zero has already done the difficult part: getting people curious. Now S-GAME has to prove that the game behind those spectacular trailers is as good as it looks. The August 17 State of Play — August 18 for Indian viewers — is the perfect opportunity to do that. Nearly 20 minutes of gameplay should give us a much better understanding of the combat, world, story and systems before the October 29 launch. The Donnie Yen connection makes the combat even more intriguing, while the game’s “Kungfupunk” setting gives it an identity that separates it from the crowded action-RPG market.

And there’s still plenty we don’t know. Will Sony reveal a demo? Will we see a major new boss? Could there be a surprise announcement about additional platforms or features?

We don’t know yet — and that’s exactly what makes this showcase worth watching.

For now, one thing is certain:

October 29 is getting closer, and Phantom Blade Zero has one big chance to prove that the hype is deserved.
